vampirism is an actual affliction, it causes a person to believe that drinking blood will keep them youthful, as was the case for various noblemen and women in the middle-ages, which was cause for very brutal murders.

There is vampirism, but what people consider vampires are really just people with rabies. Rabies is a neurotoxin that severely affects the brain. For instance, animals that sleep at night may become nocturnal if they have rabies. (Why vampires come out at night) The "Holy water" thing is because the neurotoxin makes them deathly afraid of water. The "Kill them with a hammer and wooden steak" thing is just so that it would be kinda funny if they killed Vlad the Impaler (Count Dracula, "the "Original Vampire") with his old weapons Also they have an urge to bite other people when they have rabies, so yah.

Vampirism is a lifestyle that still exists today. Some argue that it is a condition where your spiritual energy system is damaged and that you must partake in the blood, or life energy of another. Though, in using blood there is a doner system where the person giving blood has to agree and fill out specific paperwork, but most Vampires nowadays are Psi Vampires, which only feed on energies either directly from a person or from the air.
