• OK - let's analyze this one. There is clearly a reference to the old Second World War joke that the biggest difference between the British and the Americans is their common language. That was a half-way amusing remark since many people assumed that because of the common language the Brits and Yanks had a whole lot in common. With the arrival of a large number of American soldiers in the UK in preparation for the Normandy landings it quickly became apparent that there were more differences, not just in language, but also in culture and especially in individual wealth, than people realized. Now to this joke. What it is saying, leveraging off the previous joke, is that just as the French and American languages are totally different, so are Americans and Frenchmen. So when you analyzed the joke and look at the background, it is a) subtle and b) very clever.

• an american can speak french and a frenchmen can speak english, therefore this joke is not exactly correct, but is fairly humorous regardless.
